The wall of Kumbhalgarh winding along the Aravalli ridge

Ten days chasing golden light

I came for the photography and stayed for the people. Rohit met us at the airport with a sign and a bottle of water, and by the second morning it felt like travelling with a friend.

The highlight was the Kumbhalgarh wall at sunset — we walked a stretch of it almost alone, with the whole Aravalli range turning amber. The dal baati dinner with Kavita’s family in Chittorgarh was the meal of the trip.

A solo week in Jaipur

As a solo woman I was nervous, so I asked a lot of questions before booking. I knew my driver’s name, his photo and his story before I landed — that made all the difference. Amber Fort early in the morning, chai in the old city with Meenakshi, and a rooftop dinner facing Hawa Mahal. I felt looked after without ever feeling watched.

Rippled sand dunes near Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer

Three generations in the desert

Travelling with my parents and a teenager is never simple, but the pace was perfect. The camel ride at dusk had my mother laughing like a girl, and the fort at Jaisalmer was unlike anything we had seen. The dune camp had proper beds and hot showers — a relief for the grandparents — and the folk music around the fire went on well past bedtime.
