Jaisalmer Fort is one of the few living forts in the world — families still make their homes inside its sandstone walls. Wander its lanes, watch the sun set over Gadisar Lake, then head into the Thar for a night in a dune camp under the stars.

Traveller stories

Jaisalmer
Travelling with my parents and a teenager is never simple, but the pace was perfect. The camel ride at dusk had my mother laughing like a girl, and the fort at Jaisalmer was unlike anything we had seen. The dune camp had proper beds and hot showers — a relief for the grandparents — and the folk music around the fire went on well past bedtime.

Go in winter. The fort at sunrise and the dunes at sunset are extraordinary, but plan indoor time for the middle of the day.
